CPS Hatch: Environmental Respect Is A Hot Topic

Hot describes not only the climate in Hatch, NM, but also the area’s main crop. With agriculture as the number one industry for the small town, and chili the number one crop, 2012 Environmental Respect Award state winner Crop Production Services (CPS) is feeling the heat.

In addition to the local chili farmers, CPS Hatch serves growers of onions, pecans, alfalfa, lettuce, cabbage and cotton, providing them with crop protection products, seed, fertilizer and consulting services. According to Bill Huckaby, manager of operation compliance, the only way they can do this is with respect for the land and good stewardship practices.

“If our company can be good stewards, not only does it show we respect our community, but it shows regulators that we care and we will do anything in our power to protect it,” says Huckaby.

Huckaby and the team at CPS work daily to maintain top of the line facilities including new concrete containment and pads for the dry and liquid fertilizer operations. But this winning business’s commitment to environmental safety isn’t only carved in stone. The heart of the operation shines through in its care for employees, customers and community.

“Every year we go to our local schools at Halloween and deliver a pumpkin to each student,” says Huckaby. “It is our way to educate the children and the community.”

Employees are trained yearly by staff and local authorities and police and fire are invited to tour the facility at any time. CPS hosts and attends state and extension meetings, inviting their grower customers and working to build their knowledge.

“With increasing regulations, if we do not stay at the front of the industry with our environmental practices, then we could face serious ramifications,” says Huckaby. “We should all be good stewards and do everything in our power to protect the environment.”
