CPS Americus: Being Secure

As a recognized ag industry leader in southwest Georgia, Crop Production Services (CPS), Americus, GA, takes its role as environmental stewards quite seriously. “With increasing population growth, I take a personal interest in setting environmental standards that present our company as being good neighbors and, more importantly, good stewards of our natural surroundings,” says Branch Manager Ed Everett.

At the retail outfit it seems no expense has been spared in ensuring an environmentally secure operation. All the company’s fertilizer and chemical tanks are stored in sealed concrete containments that have the capacity of holding 110% of its largest tank. Also, each chemical tank has its own dedicated line and pump, so there is no risk of cross contamination.

The company’s bulk chemical facility is completely covered and also features a sealed dike system, alleviating the possibility of accidental contamination of the environment.

Keeping its employees educated is also crucial to the CPS mission. “We take a monthly inventory on all products and a weekly inventory of all hazardous products,” says Everett. “During inventories we explain to employees the hazards associated with each product and proper procedures to handle the accidental discharge of a product.”

CPS also assigns three employees to execute an emergency plan should the need arise. “We have three employees assigned to this duty because of the fact that it is necessary to have at least one trained employee at the location during all business hours,” says Everett. “If an incident occurs after hours, all names of the responsible employees are clearly marked on the entrance to our property.”

Community involvement is also stressed at CPS. “The positive message that we send to industry leaders is that we are good stewards and good business neighbors,” says Everett. “We work with the local Boy Scouts, FFA, churches and community projects, and we also have a large radio tower that local farmers use to run GPS on their tractors. I feel that our dedication to community projects has allowed us to reach all audiences of our community.”
