Downey: What Does Sustainable Ag Mean To Retailers?

Ag retailers who understand the broader concept of sustainability will find major opportunities as they create and profit from more sustainable practices, said Dave Downey, Director for the Center For Food and Agricultural Business, Purdue University, in his recent blog on the Agricultural Retailers Association’s Web site.

“We are now beginning to see much more attention to sustainability issues in the Great Plains and Midwest,” Downey said. “Efforts by ag retailers and farmers together are attempting to improve water quality in Iowa. And, much more effort is coming.”

The bottom line is that sustainability is already making a huge impact on agriculture, Downey said, and its impact will grow dramatically in the immediate future. “While some are highly resistant to anything that limits their freedom or flexibility, sustainable agricultural production is the responsibility of every business entity and every person involved in food production,” he said.
