Conference To Cover Drought, Impact On 2013 Growing Season

The Indiana Certified Crop Adviser Conference will be December 18-19 at the Indianapolis Marriott East, 7202 E. 21st St., Indianapolis, IN. It will include speakers from 10 states, including nine Purdue Extension educators, on topics spanning nutrient, soil and water, pest, and crop management.

“Our speakers have a great deal of expertise and are some of the most knowledgeable professionals in their particular crop management areas,” said Tony Vyn, a Purdue agronomy professor and a conference organizer. “Our Purdue speakers participated in replicated field-scale research and on-farm trials at over 40 Indiana locations in 2012. They have a great deal of soil-specific and environment-specific experiences to share.”

The conference’s first day will be devoted primarily to drought-related topics, such as agronomic and meteorological recaps of 2011 and 2012, soil fertility updates, refuge strategies, and climate-resilient crops.

The second day will include sessions on tools and techniques such as vertical tillage, equipment selection for precision farming, crop models and ear mold management.

The conference is geared toward CCAs, but registration is open to farmers, Extension educators, graduate students and agriculture retailers.

“We have fabulous speakers and relevant topics, and that combination is put together with the participant in mind,” Vyn said. “We’re also providing the educational units that Certified Crop Advisers need. This is one of the best educational opportunities available. With the four tracks, attendees can choose between four or five different offerings at any one time and pick up educational units where they need them.”

This is the 10th year of the conference planning partnership between the Field Crops Extension staff of Purdue and the board members of the Indiana Certified Crop Advisers.

Registration is due before Dec. 12. Participants can register here. Cost for CCAs is $195 for both days, $100 for one day; cost for non-CCAs is $300 for both days or $150 for one day.
