2013 PACE Initiatives

Under the PACE initiative brand, the CropLife Media Group (CLMG) develops a number of special projects designed to highlight techniques and strategies that enhance the level of professionalism in ag retailing, and create opportunities for discussion among retail management.

At the 2012 fall meeting, the PACE Advisory Council and CLMG established the following five initiatives for 2013:

1. Encourage retailers to get involved in state environmental regulation process. Agriculture states are having discussions about controlling nutrient use to improve water quality, which could have a substantial and potentially detrimental impact on the farmer’s ability to maximize production. Retailers can provide an important, authoritative voice in these discussions.

2. Champion the collaborative approach to grower relationships. An increasing number of growers are looking for a wider variety of advice and services that go beyond product delivery. Retailers must be problem solvers in addition to reliable suppliers of inputs.

3. Focus on recruiting talent that will make up the next generation of managers. Retirements are imminent throughout agriculture, from manufacturers to retailers. With a shrinking pool of talent available at all levels, retailers must be focused on finding and holding onto top prospects.

4. Present a view of the value that retailers will provide to growers in the years ahead. Encourage retailers to visualize what their customer will look like (and demand) a decade into the future, and begin now to shape their business to meet those needs.

5. Continue to encourage using times of high resources to prepare for leaner times. There’s no better time to prepare for a downturn than when resources are available and plentiful.
