GMS-2 Offers Diversity

When ice skaters land a “quad,” it means they’ve successfully completed one of their sport’s most impressive and difficult moves, a four-rotation jump. In precision agriculture circles, the GMS-2 geographic information system (GIS) handheld mobile GPS receiver from Topcon Positioning Systems, Inc. has landed the first quad of its kind.

The flexible, multi-function GMS-2 is the industry’s first GIS/GPS product to combine dual-constellation tracking, an integrated digital camera, an electronic compass, and the ability to be used as a GIS mapping system or a field controller.

These four elements, combined with a Windows CE operating system, allow the GMS-2 to simplify and expedite GIS mapping tasks.

Wide Array Of Options

The system includes options to suit every situation and budget. These options include a beacon receiver, Topcon Tools GIS post-processing office software, and various TopSURVE field software programs that provide accuracy levels from sub-meter to centimeter range.

The two choices of field management and mapping software include the TopSURVE-GIS, a field controller software that adds GIS mapping capabilities for standard GIS functions. It can be combined with a real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS system for higher accuracy. The TopPAD field mapping and management software combines the power of ESRI ArcPad field software with a special user interface designed to fully utilize all of Topcon’s GPS capabilities.
