The Commodity Classic Turns 20

Twenty years ago, a handful of grower associations decided to pool their resources and hold an annual end-of-winter trade show event called the Commodity Classic. That first show was held in Phoenix, AZ, and drew a few hundred guests by most estimates.

This week, between February 26 and 28, close to 10,000 attendees will gather in Phoenix for the 20th edition of the Commodity Classic. The show has expanded over the years to include not only corn and soybean growers, but wheat and sorghum growers, equipment manufacturers and all manner of crop protection companies. In fact, many crop protection suppliers use the Commodity Classic as a way to introduce those who make their living from agriculture to the latest products and ideas they have on hand. And in another year, the AgConnect show will formally join forces with the Commodity Classic, giving the trade show component of the event a decidedly high-tech feel.

Of course, one of the highlights of any Commodity Classic is the keynote address. This year, that spot will belong to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, making his sixth appearance as the convention’s opening speaker.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming Secretary Vilsack back to Commodity Classic,” said National Corn Growers Association President Chip Bowling. “With so much going on in the nation’s capital that impacts their lives, the audience will be eager to get his report on the top issues facing our growers, such as trade and the Farm Bill.”

As always, CropLife magazine will be at the Commodity Classic in force. Look for reports from the show’s key moments in upcoming issues of CropLife and online at our Website, www.croplife.com.
