Giving Thanks For Another Great Year

As I write this week’s enewsletter column, we at CropLife magazine have just put the finishing touches on our December print edition. This final issue for the 2014 calendar year contains our annual look at how the nation’s top ag retailers did during the year by detailing the results from our yearly CropLife 100 survey. Overall, the industry’s numbers are good, but there are hints that 2015 could be more of a struggle than previous years were – something we will dive into in-depth during our January 2015 State of the Industry issue.

For this week, however, it’s a time to give thanks for what we have, both individually and as an industry. On an individual basis, 2014 has been a pretty rough year, with health issues in my immediate family and the loss of my mother following a long illness. But I also have several things to be thankful for – a loving family, a job I love and the support of a great bunch of co-workers and friends.

From an industry perspective, I am thankful 2014 was another successful year for the ag retail marketplace. In fact, for the past five years, agriculture in general has been riding a wave of profitability, with overall sales and revenues improving each and every year for all of those who make their living from this long-standing career path. Indeed, since I first started covering this market at the dawn of the 21st century, I can’t remember another stretch of time with such healthy commodity prices and margin improvement as most ag retailers have enjoyed these past few years.

So ag retailers, my Thanksgiving message for 2014 is a simple one – remember well how successful the past few years have been for agriculture. And say a few prayers that more good times are just ahead.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
