Training Ag, To Come Together

Regardless of the profession, training is a constant. No matter the marketplace or industry, companies need to continually train their workers, covering everything from new internal procedures for handling billing to what employees should do in the event of an emergency. It’s on this last point that ag retailers generally need to provide training to their workers at least a few times per year.

But sometimes, these types of training programs need to be a little more all-encompassing and organized to be truly effective. To this end, The Asmark Institute, Owensboro, KY, is in the process of building a new 26,000-square-foot training complex in Bloomington, IL. When finished, this complex will serve as the central dispatch point for the Professional Applicator Training course.

The Asmark Institute is partnering with a pair of Illinois trade associations in this effort – the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association (IFCA) and the Grain & Feed Association of Illinois (GFAI). In fact, IFCA will relocate its offices to this new facility in March.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the move,” said IFCA President Jean Payne at the association’s recent annual meeting. “This center will provide the perfect place for agriculture to train its workers on all aspects of industry safety and regulations.” In particular, she added, GFAI members will use the facility to train workers on safety at grain elevators.

But, said Payne, all branches of agriculture can benefit from having such a facility at their disposal. “I’ve talked to some growers who can see the need for training for their operations as well,” she said. “Hopefully, we will see many different parts of agriculture using this training facility in the future.”

I concur. Although the various sectors of agriculture don’t always see eye-to-eye on all matters, I think they would all agree that providing continual training to their members is a good idea for everyone.
