Welcome to 2013! I wish everyone out there a happy and healthy new year!
Speaking of the turn of the calendar, I was reminded of one annual New Year’s Day tradition for many while out shopping this past weekend. Making my way through the grocery store aisles, I heard a couple talking.
“Can we get some of this ice cream?” asked a husband to his wife.
“Sure, but only get a small one,” she answered. “Remember – we are giving up unhealthy foods as our New Year’s resolution.”
This made me chuckle a little bit. For many, I know the coming of the New Year’s Day means making promises to better themselves – giving up certain foods, quitting smoking or losing weight, for example. And I’m all for everyone trying to improve themselves in some fashion.
But do we really need to wait for New Year’s Day to make these kinds of resolutions? Wouldn’t it be easier to make life-changing promises to ourselves when they are needed rather than waiting for the calendar to change to do so? The sad fact is many resolutions made in good faith on New Year’s Day are abandoned by the end of the winter months and not picked up again until the following January 1.
So here’s my 2013 resolution: This year, I promise to make more resolutions on a daily basis and not wait another 365 days to enact them. I also hope for the ag industry to have another strong year in 2013 and I resolve to do whatever I can (in my own limited way) to help this wish become a reality.
