A Moment’s Pause For The Spirit Of The Season

This time of year, I spend some of my free time watching old Christmas-themed movies and specials. I particularly like the ones that pre-date the 1960s, when the spirit of the season seemed so much simpler than it seems today.

One of my favorites is the original Miracle on 34th Street. Released in 1947, the movie tells the story of a lovable character who believes he is the one true Santa – a point which the movie leaves largely up to the viewer in the end. But for me, one of the truly inspired parts of this holiday classic is when Kris Kringle is talking to Susan Walker about his concerns for the spirit of the season.

“For the past 50 years or so, I’ve been getting more and more worried about Christmas,” says Kringle. “Seems we’re all so busy trying to beat the other fellow in making things go faster and look shinier and cost less that Christmas and I are sort of getting lost in the shuffle.”

To me, it’s funny how a quote about life in the late 1940s could so easily apply to life in the early 2010s. With everyone scrambling to get their hands on the latest high-tech gadget, smartphone and electronic toy, does anyone still remember why the Christmas season exists at all?

So in this spirit, I would like to recommend that everyone out there take a moment’s pause during their daily grind to think about what’s truly important – family, loved ones, friends, health and general well-being (coupled with your particular religious beliefs).

And to everyone out there, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us here at CropLife!
