2012 National Policy Conference To Look At Politics, Food & Farm Bill

Although these are, by all perspectives, a great time to be involved in the agricultural field, there are still several issues that remain challenges for the industry. Acknowledging this, CropLife America has made the focus of its 2012 National Policy Conference “The Politics of Food and the 2012 Farm Bill: Are You Being Served?” This year’s event will be a day long affair at the Newseum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, May 16.

As in previous years, the 2012 National Policy Conference will feature several panel discussions looking at these varied topics in a more in-depth manner. First up will be a panel looking at the food culture in the digital age, featuring bloggers and how they report the news of agriculture to their online readers. Another pair of panels will feature speakers looking at the proposed 2012 Farm Bill and how it is likely to differ from the 2009 version. In addition, some panelists will discuss how some cuts to the 2012 Farm Bill will impact agriculture – and what might mean for the industry on the whole.

To me, the luncheon discussion sounds very interesting – an in-depth look at the regulatory landscape for agriculture in the wake of Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring.” It seems hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since this analysis of agricultural practices first appeared, but its impact continues to be felt industry-wide. Part of this session will look at how this book changed regulation of agriculture, for better and for worse.
