Environmental Respect: Going Green In The Middle Of Philadelphia

Green Roof

Environmental Respect Awards winners had the chance to see a special environmentally-friendly project located in the heart of Philadelphia called the Green Roof.

During the recent 2015 Environmental Respect Awards event, sponsored by DuPont Crop Protection, winners were treated to a day-long tour of Philadelphia, PA, one of the birthplaces of the early U.S. Among the sites visited were the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Constitution Hall and the Liberty Bell.

However, in addition to visiting American history, Environmental Respect Awards winners also had the chance to see a special environmentally-friendly project located in the heart of the city. On the eighth floor of the PECO building sits a field of plants and flowers. Affectionately called “The Green Roof,” this construct consists of a variety of plants ranging in sizes from four to eight inches, 3,000 square feet of pavers and 470 lineal feet of railing. According to a PECO spokesperson, the roof helps to reduce stormwater run-off by absorbing approximately 60% to 70% of the city’s annual rainfall of 1.5 million gallons. It also saves on heating and cooling costs for the company by reducing the peak summertime rooftop temperatures by approximately 60 to 80 degrees F.

“This is a very special roof, and it was designed and built with environmental respect in mind,” a PECO spokesperson told the assembled Environmental Respect Award winners. “For winning such a prestigious honor yourselves, I’m sure everyone in this room can appreciate how much effort and thought went into designing, building and maintaining this roof for the benefit of everyone that cares about the environment we live and work in.”
