Methyl Bromide

Action/Use:
  • Fumigant
Use: Preplant soil fumigation with chloropicrin to control nematodes, insects, weed seeds, and fungi.
Identification
Common Name(s): Methyl Bromide (BSI, ISOE, JMAF, ESA); ; Bromure de Méthyl (ISOF)
Chemistry
Class: Alkyl bromide.
Properties: Colorless, odorless gas at normal temperatures and pressures; liquified gas handled as a liquid (14.4 lb./gal.) under moderate pressure. Specific gravity at 0°C & 760 mm Hg=1.732. Vapor density ~3.27. Boiling point 3.6°C. Vapor pressure at 20°C 1400 mm/Hg; 40°C 2600 mm/Hg. Viscosity=0.22 centistokes at 0°C. Readily soluble in lower alcohols, ethers, esters, ketones, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon disulfide.
Methyl Bromide
Mode of Action / Resistance Management
Chemical Group: alkyl halides
Mode of Action: miscellaneous non-specific (multi-site) inhibitors
Action Group: IRAC Group 8A
Registration
U.S.A.: Use was phased out over a period ending 2005 as a result of Montreal Protocol. EPA is allowing critical use exemptions where alternatives do not exist. In 2010, EPA is providing for import or production of 1956 metric tons for critical use needs. Another 1028 metric tons of "critical stock" was made available to producers, importers and distributors, if the methyl bromide was produced before 2005.
Outside U.S.A.: Under the Montreal Protocol, use in developed (industrialized) countries is to be completely eliminated in 2005. In developing (non-industrial) countries, use to be completely eliminated in 2015.
