Acephate
Mode of Action / Resistance Management
Chemical Group: Organophosphate
Mode of Action: Acetylcholine esterase inhibitor
Action Group: IRAC Group 1
Registration
U.S.A.: Orthene* marketed by Valent U.S.A. Corp.
Outside U.S.A.: Ortran* and Orthene* marketed by Arvesta Corp.; Acifat*.
Environmental Guidelines
Hazards: Fish: LC50 >1000 ppm (rainbow trout, bluegill). Bird: LD50 350 mg/kg (mallard); LD50 140 mg/kg (pheasant). Bee: LC50 0:2 µg/bee
Soil Particle Adsorption: Acephate dissipates rapidly with half-lives of <3 and 7 days in aerobic and anaerobic soils, respectively. Major metabolite was CO2 in both soil types. TLC and soil column studies indicate acephate is mobile in most soils but that aged residues (excluding acephate and its degradate methamidophos) are immobile in sandy loam soil. Apparently most of the applied acephate and degradate methamidophos degrade to immobile compounds in 20 days
Water Solubility: Room temperature, 65%
Safety Guidelines
Signal Word: CAUTION
Toxicity Class: III
Toxicity: Tech: (Rat): Oral LD50 1447 mg/kg (male); 1030 mg/kg (female); Inhalation >61.7 mg/kg. (Rabbit): Dermal LD50 >10,250 mg/kg; Inhalation >14.8 mg/l
Handling/storage Cautions: Keep container closed when not in use. Store in cool, dry place away from food and feed. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with mouth, skin, and eyes
Protective Clothing: Long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Waterproof gloves. Shoes plus socks.
