Deal Puts Croplan Genetics In Tennessee

Tennessee Farmers Cooperative, a CropLife 100 member, will now be marketing Croplan Genetics seed products as its proprietary line of seed.

The products include corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton seed in the agreement finalized on July 1. Tennessee Farmers Cooperative (TFC) is a farm supply organization owned by 59 member co-ops across the state. Croplan Genetics is a brand of Winfield Solutions, one of the largest seed companies in the U.S. and a subsidiary of Land O’Lakes, a farm supply and dairy food-marketing cooperative based in St. Paul, MN. Croplan Genetics offers the latest and most complete line of conventional and biotechnology traits on the market.

“TFC entered into this agreement to ensure that producers serviced by Tennessee Co-ops and ADI Agronomy will continue to have supply and access to the latest and best varieties available in the marketplace today,” says Bart Krisle, TFC chief executive officer. “Combining resources with Winfield Solutions also allows us to continue to offer a farmer-owned brand to our members.”

Beginning with fall purchases, the Croplan Genetics brand will replace Co-op’s FFR corn, soybean, and wheat seed, giving growers access to a larger selection of products with a broader range of technologies and traits. Co-op will continue to offer FFR grain sorghum and forages.

This change was necessary, says TFC Seed Department Manager Roger West, because the economics of today’s seed business have put smaller companies at a disadvantage to national seed brands. “This new venture puts us in a position to continue to compete with the national brands on a level playing field and remain a dominant player in the seed business for years to come,” he says.

Although the brand is marketed through local cooperatives in more than 40 states with hundreds of products in its lineup, Croplan Genetics does offer seed specifically designed for Southern soils and conditions. In fact, Tennessee farmers may even have access to the same FFR hybrid or variety they’ve been accustomed to growing, although it will have a different name.

TFC and Croplan Genetics experts will help members “cross reference” FFR products with Croplan Genetics hybrids and varieties where possible, and detailed product guides and Web-based information will assist growers in selecting the right hybrids and varieties for their farms. Croplan Genetics also provides technical information to member Co-ops and growers through the unique Answer Plot program, the company’s primary educational, research, and promotional forum.
