Valor OK’d For Preplant Corn

Growers can now use Valor Herbicide from Valent U.S.A. Corp. 14 days prior to planting no-till or minimal till field corn., providing tough weed control and rotational flexibility.

Valor, recently registered for corn by EPA, is the first preemergence PPO herbicide for field corn and a new mode of action for growers to use when controlling tough weeds, including ragweed, lambsquarters, marestail, Palmer pigweed, and waterhemp. Valor also offers competitive grass control.

Valent’s research shows Valor works well in two programs prior to planting Roundup Ready corn:

  • 2 ounces of Valor with atrazine 14 days prior to planting followed by an in-season application of Roundup.
  • 2 ounces of Valor 14 days prior to planting followed by a postemergence application of atrazine with Roundup.

“In our trials, Valor plus atrazine has demonstrated better performance on broadleaf weeds and competitive grass control compared to other preemerge corn herbicides,” says John Pawlak, Valor product development manager.

With fluctuating commodity prices, Valor’s rotational flexibility is an important feature for growers who want the option to make last-minute planting decisions. A grower can plant corn, cotton, peanuts, rice, soybeans, or wheat after a preplant Valor application if they follow the basic plant back restrictions.
