Getting Answers On Weeds

Mike Owen, Iowa State

More than 60 growers and their trusted retailer partners in southeast Iowa gathered in Coralville to get the lowdown on weed issues in the region at the first Total Weed Management Answer Forum last month, hosted by CropLife® magazine and sponsored by Monsanto.

In the Midwest, weeds that have been traditional resistance troublemakers — waterhemp, giant ragweed, and lambsquarters — are showing signs of glyphosate resistance development in some areas, giving an early warning of more problems to come. The Answer Forum was developed to provide a time and place for growers, Extension, retailers, and a manufacturer to lay out and discuss the big weed management issues going into the 2007 season.

The speaker list included Iowa State University Weed Specialist Dr. Mike Owen, who provided an overview of the key issues and weed management recommendations for the coming season, as well as Monsanto’s Dr. Jennifer Ralston, Roundup Ready technical lead. A robust question and answer session followed the discussion.

“This was an outstanding meeting of the minds on the issue of weed management,” says Paul Schrimpf, group editor of CropLife magazine and moderator of the Forum. “Getting all the parties in one room, including four of the region’s retail dealerships — Nichols Agriservice, Eldon C. Stutsman Inc., Sweetland Ag Tech, and Wellman Farm Center — was critical to presenting a balanced and accurate message to key growers in southeast Iowa.”
