Combatting Palmer Amaranth, Other Herbicide-Resistant Weeds Focus of Conference

The Palmer Project of Simpson College is hosting a weed resistance conference focused on Palmer amaranth January 4-6, 2018. The conference aims to bring together a wide variety of agricultural stakeholders for an intensive three-day discussion on Palmer amaranth and other herbicide-resistant weeds.

Through presentations, panels, posters and invited speakers, those in attendance will hear multiple perspectives on these problems. Several notable speakers include:

  • Jason Keith Norsworthy, Professor of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science at the University of Arkansas, presenting “Lessons Learned from Herbicide-Resistant Palmer Amaranth: Advising Iowa Famers”
  • Bob Hartzler, Extension Weed Specialist and Professor of Agronomy for Iowa State University, presenting “Palmer Amaranth in Iowa: Past, Present, and Future”
  • Robert Price, Senior Seed Botanist for the Plant Pest Diagnostics Branch of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, presenting “An Overview of Amaranths”

The conference will also include panels of domestic and international producers, policymakers, environmentalists, etc. Attendance is not limited to academic researchers; all agricultural stakeholders are encouraged to attend.
