March 12, 2010 The pipeline for new insect and disease control products looks strong, and retailers should expect to continue to see new product introductions in the near future, including:
Dow AgroSciences is anticipating regulatory approval in 2012 for Sulfoxaflor, an insecticide from a novel, new class of chemistry known as the sulfoximines. Sulfoxaflor will provide control of a wide range of sap-feeding insects in many different crop segments. At the recent Beltwide Cotton Conference in New Orleans, LA, scientists from both Dow AgroSciences and several university entomologists highlighted control of Lygus spp. and aphid control in cotton. In additional field trials, sulfoxaflor has also shown a high level of control of whiteflies.
Pending regulatory approval from EPA, Bayer CropScience’s Luna (fluopyram) fungicide is expected to be available for use by 2011.
DuPont has applied for registration for Vertisan (penthiopyrad) in the U.S., Canada, and the European Union (represented by the United Kingdom). These countries will conduct a joint review as part of an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Work Share project for regulatory harmonization. DuPont’s Vertisan will provide broadspectrum disease control in row crops such as soybeans, wheat, and barley. It has been found effective against a broad range of damaging plant diseases, including some diseases which have developed resistance to other fungicide chemistry classes.
DuPont anticipates launching the new fungicide as early as 2011. DuPont also plans to develop additional products based on the active ingredient penthiopyrad. Each of the new products will provide unique advantages to growers.
