“A reliable transportation network is vital to moving fertilizer around the nation. A ton of fertilizer might travel by ocean-going ships, railroads, river barges and trucks before ultimately reaching the farmer. If farmers do not receive their fertilizer in a timely manner, there are potential consequences for food security and the environment. We are confident that Ms. Chao will be an outstanding leader who will work to ensure that our nation’s transportation infrastructure is the best in the world.”

“The U.S. fertilizer industry is one of the world’s largest, and makes a tremendous contribution to U.S. economic growth, employing American workers in manufacturing, wholesale, and retail agribusiness sectors. Our industry generates more than $139 billion in economic activity, and we directly employ more than 80,000 Americans in quality high paying jobs. When combined with an additional 372,603 indirect jobs, the fertilizer industry makes 452,702 U.S. jobs available to our nation’s workers. A high functioning transportion system is critical to our ability to maintain these contributions.”

“We look forward to working with Secretary Chao to ensure that the nation’s transportation system works with maximum efficiency, and helps ensure that farmers thrive.”
