Nitrogen Management Feeds Producers’ Corn And Bottom Line

Nitrogen is the core ingredient that ensures full yield potential in corn.

An early spring planting season coupled with the prior success of nitrogen management aids like NZONE by AgXplore has led to an explosive demand for product in 2012.

“NZONE will again be managing nitrogen in fields on thousands of acres this season,” said Brandon McMillan, Director of Product Development and Registration for AgXplore. “AgXplore anticipated the growing appetite for NZONE so we ramped up production and are prepared with inventory.”

Increased yields are the result of NZONE’s power to mobilize nitrogen as ammonium, which is the most efficient form for corn to utilize.

Field trials have shown that NZONE applied with nitrogen increases yields as much as 18 bushels per acre versus untreated corn.

“NZONE provides a complete meal for a corn plant to consume by protecting nitrogen in its ammonium form,” said McMillan.

If NZONE isn’t present with the nitrogen at the time of application to protect the ammonium, it breaks down to nitrates, which are easily lost to environmental factors and not as efficient for plants to utilize. Soil sampling on NZONE-applied fields has shown higher nitrogen levels available to plants up to 30 to 40 days after application.

“It’s a fact that if a plant absorbs ammonium as opposed to nitrates, it develops a larger root mass and takes less energy toll on the plant,” McMillan said. “Increased energy accelerates corn growth and kernel production to fill out the cob more efficiently, leading to higher yields.”

Tissue testing of corn plants that have received nitrogen combined with NZONE has revealed greater levels of nitrogen in the plant versus without NZONE. Producers also benefit from NZONE’s versatility – it can be applied during any weather condition, on any crop or with any nitrogen form.

Field trial results prove NZONE’s advantages, but the truest test for any nitrogen aid, according to McMillan, is if farmers can see it working in their fields.

“NZONE is a product that tells a story as the season progresses,” McMillan said. “NZONE’s success is visually observed throughout the growing season, higher levels of nitrogen can be measured in tissue samples and increased yields are in the hopper at harvest time.”
