Canadian Regulatory Officials Approve AVAIL For All Crops

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has granted approval of AVAIL Phosphorus Fertilizer Enhancer for use in liquid formulations of phosphorus fertilizer across all crops grown in Canada.

Research has shown that as much as 75% to 95% of applied phosphorus fertilizer gets fixed in the soil, making it unavailable for plant uptake and use. AVAIL is uniquely formulated to reduce phosphorus fixation in the soil by shielding applied phosphorus from elements that tie it up. To date, AVAIL has been used on more than 59 million acres and a variety of crops worldwide.

“We are committed to helping farmers address the need for higher production on fewer acres to meet the challenge of rising food demand,” said Greg Thompson, chief operating officer for Verdesian Life Sciences. “To that end, we are making a commitment to Canada with our products, technologies, research and personnel.”

Joe Olesko, Verdesian regional manager for western Canada, said that the newly registered AVAIL liquid formulation will be a valuable tool for Canadian farmers who need to address phosphorus-deficient soils, which can be widespread. “With our cool soils and cold temperatures, availability of phosphorus greatly limits plant uptake of that critical nutrient,” he said. “I think our farmers are going to be amazed at the return on investment they will see with AVAIL due to increased phosphorus efficiency.”

Olesko also noted that granular AVAIL formulations for use with dry phosphorus fertilizer applications are already labeled in Canada. “AVAIL in the liquid formulation will be very easy to use in spring starter fertilizer applications,” he added. “AVAIL has a proven track record on crops such as wheat, canola, barley, corn, soybeans and pulse crops such as peas and lentils.”
