Ag Secretary Praises Biofuels

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer says increasing the renewable fuel standard from 36 billion gallons by 2022 to 42 billion gallons would displace another 1 billion barrels of oil, according to Forbes.

Forbes quotes Shafer’s comments at the recent Dakotafest farm show: "Expanded production of renewable biofuels promises newfound riches for farmers but also improved national security,” Shafer said during a forum with Sen. John Thune (R-SD). “They are here to stay. They are part of our energy solutions. If we’re going to cut our dependence on foreign suppliers, we must be committed to building this new energy portfolio.”

The Farm Bill that Congress passed in June calls for production of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022, including 21 billion gallons from sources other than corn and soybeans. Bumping that total production to 42 billion gallons would displace 1 billion barrels of oil that wouldn’t have to be imported, Schafer pointed out. ‘If we do that, it would double the farm income in this country,’ he added.
