AGCO Honors 2012 Operator Of The Year

Glen Slabaugh of Clunette Elevator Co. in Leesburg, IN, has been named the 2012 AGCO Operator Of The Year.

Recognizing his outstanding commitment to his profession, high level of performance and service to his community, Indiana custom applicator Glen Slabaugh has been named the 2012 Operator of the Year by AGCO Application Equipment, which sponsors the annual program to recognize North America’s best professional applicators.

Slabaugh, who works for Clunette Elevator Co. in Leesburg, IN, was announced as the Operator of the Year Wednesday, Nov. 28, during the Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) Conference and Expo in San Diego, CA. This past season, Slabaugh achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing one million acres applied during his 37-year career.

Slabaugh, who wins a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle, noted the dramatic technology advances that have taken place in the application industry during his nearly four-decade career. Citing his pride in being part of the industry, he said he appreciates the recognition that the Operator of the Year program brings to hard-working professional applicators.

“What an honor and privilege to represent application workers throughout the United States and Canada,” Slabaugh said. “These are the guys who go out early in the morning, come back late at night and get the machines ready for the next morning again.”

“Glen Slabaugh truly epitomizes the long hours, skill and dedication it takes to be recognized as one of the industry’s top professional applicators,” said Mark Sharitz, director of marketing for AGCO Application Equipment, who announced Slabaugh’s selection. This year’s nominees were all impressive, but Glen’s 37-year commitment to the industry and exceptional credentials, both in the field and in his community, made him the stand-out candidate. Slabaugh was nominated by Jared Haughee, Clunette Elevator Co. certified crop adviser, who cited his positive attitude, excellent customer relationships and knowledge base second to none. Well- respected in his community, Slabaugh has also been head deacon of his church for nearly 10 years, served as a Sunday school teacher and has volunteered his time visiting patients in nursing homes to help brighten their day. “Glen is known all throughout our community and customer base, and everyone has the same opinion that he is an honest, caring and hard-working servant,” Haughee said.

Slabaugh, along with three other Operator of the Year finalists, attended the ARA conference as guests of AGCO Application Equipment. The other three are Paul “Rocky” Lang of CHS, Inc., in Royal City, WA.; Carl Petersen of Crop Production Services in Pipestone, MN.; and Paul Folden, of Garrison Farmers Union Elevator in Garrison, ND.

“All four of these professionals are winners in the true sense of the word, as they represent the very best of their industry,” said Sharitz. “We congratulate all four for the valuable contributions they make to their retail organizations, their customers and their communities.”

Now in its seventh year, Operator of the Year is open to U.S. and Canadian custom applicators who are nominated by their agricultural retailers. A panel of judges evaluates each nominee on commitment to the profession, performance in the field and community involvement.
