Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) President and CEO Daren Coppock participated in the Second Congress of Associação Nacional dos Distribuidores de Insumos Agrícolas e Veterinários (ANDAV) this past week in São Paulo, Brazil. ANDAV is the national organization for agricultural retailers and distributors in Brazil, and they are highly interested in strengthening links between the two organizations. ANDAV is planning to have representation at the ARA Conference in San Diego this November. Also on the program from the U.S. was Robbie Pate, Global Business Development Manager from ARA member Helena Chemical.

While many of the challenges faced by retailers are similar in both countries, there are a few unique ones. Because of a lack of available credit for purchases by farmers, many of the retailers deal in barter with their customers. As a result, transactions are frequently valued not in currency terms but in sacks of soybeans – purchase of that year’s fertilizer and crop protection or a new tractor are valued in how many sacks of soybeans they’re worth. As farmers’ capital position improves, they may transition to valuing transactions in reals.

ARA members and ANDAV members are definitely in similar positions with respect to a consuming urban public that has little familiarity with our industry.
