Genuity Smartstax RIB Complete Delivers Full-Season Rootworm Control

For the 2012 season, farmers who face high corn rootworm pressure have an expanded choice of Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete blended corn products which provide dual modes of action for full-season rootworm control.

Following last year’s successful, limited introduction of this refuge-in-the bag technology, Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete will have a full launch in the corn-growing area for the 2012 season. That’s good news for growers in those parts of the northern Corn Belt where corn-on-corn acres are often associated with high corn rootworm infestations.

“We have been working closely with farmers who experienced unexpected corn rootworm damage last season,” said Matt Kirkpatrick, Monsanto Corn Traits Marketing Manager. “Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete corn provides two modes of action for corn rootworm control and is a great fit for fields with high rootworm pressure.”

Kirkpatrick said that farmers who planted Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete corn last year were extremely pleased with the effective rootworm control they experienced. He noted that in 2011, corn products containing Genuity SmartStax technology achieved an average 3.8 bushel-per-acre yield advantage compared with competitive triple-stack products – and an average 8.5 bushel advantage in areas with heavy insect pressure.

Mike Groth, who farms in Northfield, MN., said he experienced great results last year with Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete corn. “In the past, I had problems with corn rootworm pressure, but noticed an immediate difference after planting Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete corn,” he said. “It was our best-yielding corn for the year. I will be planting 80% of my acres with this product in 2012 and look forward to producing more bushels per acre.”

With multiple modes of above and below ground insect control, Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete corn is offered this season in Monsanto’s national and regional seed brands, and by more than 100 independent seed companies.  These products contain a blend of 95% B.t. corn and 5% non-B.t. refuge seed.  That’s the lowest refuge in the corn-growing area, allowing farmers to protect more of their acres and maximize their whole farm yield opportunity.

Farmers who planted Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete last season also reported experiencing simpler refuge management, greater convenience and time savings because they were no longer required to plant a separate structured insect refuge.

Genuity VT Triple PRO Targets Moderate Corn Rootworm Pressure

In geographies experiencing low or moderate rootworm pressure, Monsanto also offers Genuity VT Triple PRO corn, which contains a single mode of action for corn rootworm control and dual modes of action for protection against above ground insects, including corn earworm.  Growers who plant this technology also have a good selection of refuge products to implement an insect resistance management plan.

“I have found good rootworm protection with the Genuity VT Triple PRO technology,” said Dennis Wentworth, who farms in Downs, IL. “We are in a mild to moderate rootworm risk area and we have been very satisfied with the amount of control we get with our Genuity VT Triple PRO products. By minimizing below ground pest pressure, it certainly allows us what we need to do in terms of maximizing yield potential across our corn acres.”

Both Wentworth and Groth plant Genuity corn traits in the DEKALB seed brand.
