Workshop To Address Growing Problem Of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds

Purdue Extension experts will help corn growers plan for the 2012 growing season and address problems with herbicide-resistant weeds at a March 19 workshop in Danville, IL.
The 2012 Herbicide Resistant Weeds and Planning for the 2012 Corn Planting Season meeting will run from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds Conference Center, 1900 E. Main St., Danville, IL.
"The meeting will cover the latest information on the spread and control of weeds resistant to glyphosate and other herbicides in Indiana, and how growers can make weed management programs more effective," said Jon Cain, Purdue Extension educator in agriculture and natural resources.
The program includes the following presentations:
- "Why has waterhemp become such a problematic weed?" by Bill Johnson, Purdue Extension weed scientist.
- "Trials, tribulations and triumphs with volunteer corn and its control" by Paul Marquardt, Purdue research weed scientist.
- "Burndown programs for effective no-till in areas with glyphosate-resistant marestail" by Johnson.
- "How spray water quality can impact herbicide applications," by Gurinderbir Chahal, Purdue post-doctoral research weed scientist, and Jared Roskamp, Purdue graduate research assistant in weed science.
- New minibulk rules" by Cain.
After lunch, sponsored by Farm Credit Services, Purdue Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen will give a presentation on planning for the 2012 corn planting season. It will include information about seeding rates, fertilizer programs, scouting for problems and other agronomic decisions.

Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program (PARP) credits for private pesticide applicators will be available for $10. Credits also will be available for commercial pesticide applicators (CCH).
