United Co-op To Build Grain Facility

United Cooperative has secured a permit from the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway Board to build a grain-loading facility along the railroad tracks in the town of Mazomanie.

The Sauk Prairie Eagle reports that the panel approved the permit with the condition that the grain elevator not be higher than 115 feet and a historical and archaeological survey is completed.

The riverway board also emphasized that the facility should be in compliance with the zoning of Dane County and the town of Mazomanie.

Last year, United Cooperative was turned down for a loan from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to build a grain-loading facility southeast of Sauk City because it couldn't find any suitable property. The property where United Cooperative wants to build now is near the intersection of Highway 78 and County Highway Y along the railroad tracks, and the grain facility has an option to buy the land.

Officials say the facility would need to comply with Department of Natural Resources regulations regarding environmental impacts because it may be in a wetland area.
